Changes to the 2018 Championships
This year there will not be Open/Junior awards as part of the Hampshire County Championships competition.
14/Under Swimmers in “Youth” Championships
Swimmers under 15 will NOT be accepted for the final weekend of the championships. With no Open/Junior awards, these would now effectively be time trials, which the conditions do not permit. In addition, they are adding additional finals, which means that the time available for heats is reduced by just over 10%.
Age Group Finals
There will be separate finals for Age 15, Age 16 and Age 17/Over. Last year, very few 16 years olds (particularly boys) qualified for the 16/Over finals.
In 2017, there was a large variation in the number of accepted entries for different events
- Between strokes
- Between ages
- Between sexes
The 2018 base and automatic times have been set to address this
- There are now target numbers of swims for each event, which will result in approximately the same number of swims as in 2017
- Auto and base times have been set based on 2017 entries
- Auto times have been set to 60% fill each event
- Base times have been set to 120% fill each event
In line with the Region, Hampshire County are moving to a system of accepting a fixed number of swimmers per event
Why have automatic QTs?
- To give as many swimmers as practical the certainty of acceptance
- To help in recruitment of officials and volunteers
Why have base (Consideration) times?
- To set a minimum standard and help in managing session times
